New crown - is it right though??

New postby sudzs on Tue Mar 02, 2010 10:47 am

After all the trouble I had with a crown (see my never-ending thread on here!! ) I finally had to have it replaced as my new dentist discovered a ledge just barely below the gum line after which the gum became very inflamed so between us we decided probably best to just replace it.

So I had the new crown put on last week but there is a sort of line running down the glaze on one side of it, from top to bottom. It is the inside so of course my tongue keeps checking it out! Though I can only just make it out with my tongue, with a fingernail I can really feel it clicking over it.

I was back at the dentists the day after it was fitted to have the adjusted part polished off and mentioned it to her then, asking if it was a crack! She said "oh yes, I saw that and thought it might be a crack but it isn't. I looked closley and it is just where the glaze was poured there between the cusps...."

Now this is the third crown on the same site and I am sick at the thought that this one might not be right either. So wondering if anyone would like to let me know what you think of a crown with a sort of a crease running down through the glaze. I know it's so hard to give an opinion without seeing it but any advice appreciated before I go back to here later in the week for a filling.

It certainly could be just a groove between the two cusps that the lab technician created in the crown. It really shouldn't be noticeable to your tongue that much, but if it's bothersome better let the dentist know to see if she can maybe smooth it out. I am a bit surprised that your fingernail is able to catch on it.

Thanks for the reply zzzdentist. Really appreciate you time and knowledge! :notworthy:

I've been back to the dentist to have a very large amalgam filling replaced. (it is almost a whole tooth of amalgam!!) The replacement was very rough and gritty feeling, so bad I had to cover it with gum to relieve the irritation. And so I had to go back and have that polished by her colleague (her boss actually!) as she only works there 2 days a week. Unfortunately the top of the filling seems to have been sheared off leaving a very sharp edge next to this crown. I mentioned this there and then but he said he wouldn't do anything else to it and to see how I got on once my tongue recovered from the irritation. Unfortunately the sharp edge is unbearable and I have it covered with gum now.

Sorry to go off-topic but I am in despair now as I don't have much faith or confidence left in this dental practice. I don't understand how or why a dentist would leave such a sharp edge on a filling. Did he want the dentist who fitted the filling have a look and remedy it herself maybe??

I am hoping this will be easily fixed as I can't bear much more treatment. (this is the third crown on the same site since last June) And am in two minds whether to go back to this practice or go elsewhere and get a second opinion on the crown at the same time.

Just another thing about the crown, there seems to be a tiny bit of orange colour on the biting surface in the dipped bit where the cusp on the upper tooth fits in, (sorry, I'm sure there's a correct term for that!) just like dots really. The more I live with this crown the more prounced teh groove feels and the whole thing doesn't seem to have much glaze at all.

Oh what to do now??? :weep:

Those orange dots might be pigmentation that the lab technician has added for characterization. Some teeth have stained pits and fissures, and the lab might have added some colours to mimic natural teeth. You might want to have the woman dentist recheck the crown and address your concerns. I can't really say much more about the crown as I haven't even seen it. Hopefully you will find someone who can get it corrected for you.

I went back today with the sharp edged filling issue. I exlained that it had been sheared off at a right angle. She proceeded to file down the amalgan lower and lower but somehow managing to retain the sharp edge! Then a quick go with a finishing strip but alas that didn't really make much of an impact on it all.

Sorry, I know this is the forum for crowns and bridges but the amalgam is right next to the crown...

anyway, back on topic, I never got a chance to mention the crown but on leaving today she said aboyt the amalgam, "if it's not right right tomorow, come back in" So I might do that, just to see what she proposes - to remedy both probs.... And actually, now that the amalgam has been reduced so much beside the crown, I can now feel that side of it with it's rough glaze (lack of glaze??)

I'll keep ya posted!!!
